Sacred Heart Center – A Community Partner

Virginia Rep is delighted to partner with many non-profit organizations through our Community Ticket Grant program.  With the staging of In the Heights, Virginia Rep has specifically worked to strengthen our relationships in Richmond’s Latino community.  The Sacred Heart Center is one of several organizations that will be bringing groups to see In the Heights as our guests.  Read further to learn more about this great organization and their impact on our community.

The Sacred Heart Center (SHC), a non-profit community center located in South Richmond, is one of the few organizations in the Richmond area dedicated to serving the Latino population. Founded in 1990, the SHC has a long history of serving our community. Our current mission, adopted by the Board in 2011, is to create a hub for the Latino community in the Richmond metro area that opens pathways to social and economic integration, family success, and community leadership.

The SHC offers core educational programs for both children and adults, as well as a variety of health and human services through partnerships with area organizations. Our core educational programs include English as a Second Language, GED preparation in Spanish, Citizenship Classes, Basic Spanish Language Literacy, Basic Computer Classes, our Latino Leadership Institute, our College and Career Bound program for high school students, our school readiness program for children under 5, our summer camp, and parenting classes in Spanish.

In fiscal year 2015-2016, the SHC enrolled over 500 students in our core educational programs and served over 6,400 community members through our various partnerships with service providers as part of our community hub work. Because it is a trusted organization, the SHC has become a community hub, and many non-profit partners provide services at the SHC to families and individuals. We rely on relationships with many area organizations to provide services such as food assistance, medical care, mental health counseling, academies and training programs, consular identification services, legal assistance, tax assistance, and other services that are offered in the SHC facilities. Families that participate receive needed services and learn how to navigate the service systems, thus building their own skills for future use in accessing services. Additionally, we host service provider meetings that serve to connect agencies for networking and information sharing opportunities regarding the Latino community.

As a small non-profit, the Sacred Heart Center is responsive to the unique and changing needs of the community; our programs are designed to fill gaps in services and open opportunities for those eager to advance themselves and their families. As Latino families succeed, they help to build a more prosperous and healthy Richmond metro area. For more information about the Sacred Heart Center, please visit or call 804-230-4399.
