About Ira and Savannah:
Ira is a Richmond native and has been part of the Richmond dance community since he was nine years old. He was introduced to dance through The Richmond Ballet’s outreach program, Minds In Motion. He started studying ballet at age 11 and fell in love with it after experiencing how happy he could make an audience feel through his dancing. Ira spent three seasons as a dancer in Richmond Ballet’s second professional company and is currently dancing in his third season with their main company. Ira was awarded the Malcolm Burn Award in 2010 and that accomplishment remains one of his proudest moments. Not surprisingly, on a typical day Ira spends most of his time dancing, whether it’s rehearsing with The Richmond Ballet or with the other amazing In the Heights cast members. In the Heights will be Ira’s first production with Virginia Rep and he is thrilled to be a part of the cast.
Savannah is from Gloucester, Virginia and began pursuing her passion for dance at nine years old with the Diggs School of Dance in Gloucester. In 2015, at the age of 16, she was the season’s youngest female dancer recruited to train with the Richmond Ballet. In that same year she was offered a position with their nationally recognized trainee program. After two years in this program, Savannah will move on to become part of the Richmond Ballet’s second professional company. In the Heights is not only Savannah’s Virginia Rep debut, but also her debut in a musical theatre production. She is grateful to be a part of the incredible Heights cast alongside a fellow Richmond Ballet dancer.
About Richmond Ballet:
The Richmond Ballet was founded in 1957 as a small dance company. It became the School of Richmond Ballet in 1975 and grew from a school into a professional dance company in 1984 when it became the first professional ballet company in Virginia. The Richmond Ballet is located on East Canal Street and is lead by Ms. Stoner Winslett, who became the founding Artistic Director in 1980 and serves the same role for the organization today.
